Refuse Collection

NOTICE:  Due to mechanical issues, the County will not be providing the overnight truck until further notice. If you have any questions, please contact Public Works at (540) 863-6650.

Alleghany County provides weekly curbside pickup to residents of Alleghany County, as well as the Town of Clifton Forge.  Refuse collection for businesses within the County and Town of Clifton Forge are provided, including emptying dumpsters.

Refuse Collection Fee:  There is an annual refuse fee of $80.00 for each residence and business in the County which is due on or before December 5th of each year.  A penalty shall be imposed if the refuse fee is not paid when due in the amount of ten percent or $10.00, whichever is greater.  Interest shall commence on January 1st of the year following the refuse fee due date of December 5th.  Interest shall be at a rate of ten percent per annum and shall be applied to the unpaid refuse fee and penalty thereon.

Weekly Refuse Collection Schedule:  Refuse collection begins at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday.  All refuse should be placed along the road right-of-way by 7:00 a.m.

Holiday Pickups:  Holiday refuse pickup schedules will be placed in the local newspaper if there is a change in schedule.    On holidays, refuse collection will begin earlier than normal.

Business Pickup For Dumpsters:  Dumpsters for businesses are emptied once a week based upon the annual fee above.  Additional pickups in a week can be arranged for a fee.  Businesses should contact the Utility Billing Clerk at the Public Works Department to set up an account.  Businesses will be billed monthly for additional pickups.  Questions regarding refuse bills can be directed to the Public Works Department.

Dumpster Information:  Dumpsters are not provided by Alleghany County.  Businesses or individuals are required to purchase a rear loading dumpster that is at least six cubic yards in size for the County refuse trucks to empty it.   Additional information regarding dumpsters can be obtained from the Public Works Department.

Overnight Truck:  The County provides a dump truck to be left overnight (Monday through Thursday) for County residents who have larger items that can not be collected during the regular refuse pickup. There is a fee of $100.00 for each trip that has to be paid prior to the date scheduled for leaving the truck.   Arrangements can be made through the Public Works Department for this service.  Due to mechanical issues, the County will not be providing the overnight truck until further notice. Transfer Station:   Available to County residents as well as the Town of Clifton Forge and the Town of Iron Gate, is the use of the Transfer Station.  This facility is located on Valley Ridge Road and is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

Holiday Schedule.   The transfer station will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the following holidays:  Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Juneteenth Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, and the day after Thanksgiving.   The transfer station will be closed the first Saturday of every month beginning April 6, 2024 for maintenance, every Sunday and the following holidays:  Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.   Any deviations to the holiday schedule from what is noted here will be advertised.

Special Pickup:  Individuals requiring a special pickup because of medical reasons or disability, can make arrangements through the Public Works Department for a “special pickup.”  A statement from a physician and a completed request form are required.  Form for Special Pickup (Printable in MS Word Format)
