SENIOR CENTER VAN DRIVER
Part-Time

Alleghany County is looking for an energetic professional with a passion for helping others through senior services. This position will transport seniors from their home to senior centers around the local area as well as local and out of town trips using 15 passenger vans.
This position will assist seniors to and from their home and assist them into and out of the vans. Will be responsible for meal pick up and delivery to centers, vehicle cleaning and vehicle logs.
Positive people skills are essential. Must utilize effective communication. Must be able to work with partner organizations. Hours vary primarily Monday through Friday up to 25 hours per week.
Possession of a valid appropriate driver’s permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Experience transporting people in vans is a plus. Experience working with seniors in varying capacities is a plus.

SANITATION WORKER

Alleghany County Public Works is now hiring for the position of part-time Sanitation Worker. This position is responsible for performing manual work in the collection and disposal of solid waste.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Picks up refuse in cans and unloads dumpsters.
- Provides assistance to the driver at all times during refuse collection, watching for traffic and backing up to dumpsters.
- Works at the rear of the refuse truck operating the winder and sweeper when the hopper is full.
- Communicates with the general public and provides assistance with refuse for handicap customers.
- Empties refuse truck at the Transfer Station.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing stooping, talking, visual acuity and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed outdoors with exposure to weather conditions; and near moving mechanical parts. The employee is exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, the risk of electric shock, and unpleasant odors. Work requires driving; operation of vehicle may be under potentially hazardous conditions involving road construction, inclement weather, traffic hazards, exposure to fumes and noise.

MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I

Alleghany County is accepting applications for a Maintenance Tech I. – Public Works Department. Successful applicant will be required to assist in installation of water and sewer connections, mainline installations, repair of leaks in the county water and sewer system, and operate dump truck, refuse truck, and other equipment.
Other duties include snow removal, brush haulage, cutting grass, and other duties as assigned. Applicant must possess a valid driver’s license. A CDL is preferable and will be required within 6 months of hire for those applicants who do not already possess a CDL.
