TRANSFER STATION OPERATOR I
(FLSA: Non-Exempt)
Pay Range $37,537.50 – $52,500.00 Annually
Pay dependent upon experience
The Public Works Department is currently seeking an independent, motivated, hard-working member for our solid waste team. The Transfer Station Operator I, is responsible for performing semi-skilled work in the operation of the Island Ford Transfer Station.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Operates equipment used in the operation of the transfer station.
- Inspects incoming waste to prohibit disposal of non-accepted waste, as defined in the solid waste disposal regulations.
- Assists sanitation crews in refuse collection and disposal as necessary.
Qualified applicants must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver’s license. A Waste Management Facility Operator’s License is preferred, or must have the ability to obtain after employment.

SANITATION WORKER I

The Alleghany County Public Works is seeking a dedicated and hardworking individual to join our sanitation team. As a sanitation employee, you will be responsible for the collection and disposal of solid waste. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of the County’s streets and neighborhoods
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Collection and disposal of solid waste from residential and commercial properties.
- Monitoring and reporting any issues related to sanitation services, such as overflowing dumpsters or damaged equipment.
- Attention to detail and ability to identify potential safety hazards.
- Communicates with the general public and provides assistance with refuse for handicap customers.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Physical stamina and ability to lift and move heavy objects.
- Familiarity with heavy machinery and equipment operation.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The working conditions are typically outdoor, requiring long hours and physical labor. Workers may be exposed to various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snowfall. Noise, dust, and odors can also be common in this line of work.

The Public Works Department is currently seeking an independent, motivated, and hard-working member to join our facilities maintenance team. This position plays a vital role in maintaining County facilities, and is responsible for preventative maintenance, repairs, and minor modifications of multiple locations.
Essential Job Functions:
- Ensuring the optimal functioning of facilities by conducting routine inspections and addressing issues with building systems and equipment.
- Troubleshooting, performing preventive maintenance, and basic repairs.
- Maintain all maintenance reports and documentation.
Job Knowledge/Experience:
- Thorough knowledge of principles, techniques and practices of maintenance work
- Ability to operate maintenance tools and equipment
- Ability to keep and maintain files and documentation
