The Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Corporation markets the region to relocating and expanding businesses. The following are represented on the Corporation Board of Directors: County of Alleghany, City of Covington, Towns of Clifton Forge and Iron Gate, large businesses, Dabney S. Lancaster Community College (DSLCC), Chamber of Commerce, organized labor, Alleghany Foundation, and a citizen representative. Offices are located in the County Governmental Complex. The AHEDC meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 9:00 a.m.

ENTERPRISE ZONE
The Alleghany Highlands has the Enterprise Zone Designation for specific areas in the region for commercial and industrial development. Special state and local financial incentives are available to qualifying businesses and industries. An Enterprise Zone application can be obtained by contacting the AHEDC. COVINGTON-ALLEGHANY COUNTY INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
The Covington-Alleghany County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) is governed by a board of seven directors which are appointed by the action of Covington City Council and the Alleghany County Board of Supervisors. Three members are appointed by City Council and three members are appointed by the Board of Supervisors with the seventh member rotating between the two localities. The IDA shall have and exercise all powers and duties set forth in the Industrial Development and Revenue Bond Act, Code of Virginia, 1950, Sections 15.2-4900 et seq., as amended.
