Federal Income Tax Preparation
The Alleghany County Commissioner of the Revenue’s office is an official VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) site for qualifying filers. For tax year 2023, if your total household income is $60,000 or less, you may qualify for free federal income tax preparation, including free e-file. We begin filing February 1 and you may call us at 863-6640 for more information.

State Income Tax Preparation
Staff in the Commissioner’s office will assist you in filling out your individual state tax return. There is no charge for this service. All that you have to do is bring in a complete copy of your federal tax return along with all income statements (W-2’s, 1099’s, etc).
Balance Due Returns
If you owe state income taxes, mail your payment to the Department of Taxation, P.O. Box 760, Richmond, VA 23218-0760.
State Estimated Payments
If you need to pay state estimated tax payments, mail your payment to the Department of Taxation, P.O. Box 1478, Richmond, VA 23218-1478.
Checking the Status of a Return
If you would like to check on the status of your state return, you can call us at 540-863-6640 and we will go online with the Department of Taxation and do this for you. You can also go online with the Department of Taxation at the website www.tax.virginia.gov and check the status of your return.
